Circus wall sections45 viewsThree excavated pieces of the old Roman Circus (like the Circus Maximus). They have uncovered part of the rounded, circumferencial wall and you can even still see a bit of decorated, engraved marble (in situ), but tragically, the rest of the Circus is lost forever because the main road and the nearby ramp and bridge leading to the Lyons to Marseilles motorway has destroyed the rest. dane

The amphitheatre cat44 viewsI caused quite a stir when I noticed the Amphitheatre Cat having a drink of water from a bowl then laying down in the sun.
I switched my camera on to take a picture, just as a group of Japanese tourists were walking by. Noticing the object of my interest, they called out to each other to come and see the "neko". Soon the poor little moggy was the object of a dozen of camera lenses...
Most amphitheatres had one or more cats to keep mice and rats away from the horse feed, which was stored belowdane

Arles: Les Alyscampes347 viewsThe Alyscamps, the old Roman necropolis, or City of the Dead. A silent, shady lane is lined by (empty) sarcophagi of all sizes. The best preserved and most valuable ones are displayed in the MAPA. A few of those in Les Alyscamps have legible inscriptions, but unlike those in the museum, there are no translation panels (practise your Latin !). At the end of the lane you arrive at the ruins of the Church of St. Honorat, which appears to be from the Byzantine period. dane

Chariot Race162 viewsThe first of two chariot race. Realistic bigas representing the four traditional colours (red and blue representing the ruling classes, white and green representing the plebs) vied for laurels and honours.
The most daring charioteers were the blues and reds. Their chariots were often barely on two wheels as they hurtled around the corners, drifting and causing a cloud of dust and one of them once colliding with the straw bales. The blue biga won one race and the red biga the second race an hour laterdane

Legio VIII294 viewsLegio VIII demonstrated training and several manoevers which were applied according to the kind of attack. The realistically uniformed legion was accompanied by a slinger, a Nubian spearsman and a Persian archer. The crowd were at first surprised then amused to see one of the legionaries harangued and punished by an officer for dropping his spear. He got a real dressing down - and a kick !dane

Chariot race in the Amphitheatre171 views5,000 attended the Ludi Circenses in the amphitheatre and were entertained a program including a procession, mock battles between the Ambiani and the Romans (the result was a 1:1 draw), chariot races which, because of the slighter lesser size of the course, were - in my opinion - not as spectacular as those on the MAPA field, and gladiator fights during which the gladiator armed only with a net and trident, proved himself particularly agile and skilled.dane

Goodbye to Arles535 viewsA last look back to the gate in the city wall before walking to the station to catch my train home. And if you're ever in Arles, go through these gates and stop at the café on the right. They make the most delicious omelettes and salads in the entire town.dane
